AI shopping visibility, for a store that already runs Google Shopping, is decided mostly by the same Google Merchant Center product data that feeds your Shopping ads. Google says Merchant Center feeds "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results", and that there is no special markup or AI file to add (Google Search Central, updated July 10, 2026). So the playbook is a feed playbook: complete and accurate core attributes, specific titles, highlights and conversational attributes, reviews, then measurement in the new AI performance report.

This guide is for advertisers who already manage a Merchant Center feed for Shopping or Performance Max (PMax) campaigns. It covers which data AI Mode and AI Overviews read, where Shopping ads appear inside those answers, what to fix first, and how to check whether the fixes worked. If you need the basics of the account itself, start with our Google Merchant Center account setup guide.

What does AI shopping visibility mean for a Google Shopping advertiser?

It means how often your products are shown, compared or recommended when a shopper asks a conversational question in Google's AI experiences, mainly AI Mode and AI Overviews. These answers draw on the Shopping Graph, which Google described in October 2026 as "60+ billion continually refreshed product listings" (Google, October 15, 2026). Your Merchant Center feed is how your catalog gets into that graph with the attributes you control.

There are two sides to it, and they use the same data:

  • Organic visibility. Products shown in AI answers through free listings. This is what Merchant Center's AI performance insights report measures.
  • Paid visibility. Shopping ads from your existing Shopping and PMax campaigns, which can now serve inside AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Google's guidance for website content says the same thing in a different way: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode", and good practice includes "Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date" (AI features and your website). There is no separate "AI feed" to build. The work is making the feed you already have complete enough to answer long, specific questions.

Which Merchant Center data do AI shopping surfaces read?

Google has not published a ranking formula for AI Mode. What it has published is which attributes it built for AI-driven surfaces and what the core attributes must contain. The table below sums up the parts that matter most, with Google's own rule for each.

DataGoogle's ruleWhy it matters in a conversational query
title, descriptionRequired. Up to 150 and 5,000 characters, describing only the productLong questions name use cases and specs; a vague title gives the system little to match
price, availabilityRequired. Must match the landing page and checkoutAnswers that compare offers or filter by budget rely on current price and stock

Sources for each row are in the steps below. For a full walk through the base attributes, see the 14 product attributes you need in Google Merchant Center.

Do Shopping ads appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews?

Yes. Google's help center states: "Existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible to serve ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode." They run in English in the United States and in select English-speaking markets (Google Ads Help). Three consequences for advertisers:

  • No new campaign is needed. Your Shopping and PMax campaigns enter the auction as they are, with the same feed.
  • No separate targeting or opt-out. You cannot target AI Overviews or AI Mode on their own, or opt out of them apart from Search. Negative keywords and brand exclusions still apply.
  • No separate reporting. Queries that trigger ads in these answers sit in your standard campaign and search terms reports, in aggregate. PPC Land reported in September 2026 that there is still no Google Ads segment that isolates AI Mode delivery, while Google tests inline carousels and single sponsored product units inside AI Mode answers (PPC Land, September 6, 2026).

Expansion is moving fast. On October 28, 2026, Google said ads in AI Mode are scaling to ten more countries, including Australia, Canada and India, that it plans to add the United Kingdom, Brazil and Mexico in Q4 2026, and that it is launching multiturn ads in the US, which can appear in follow-up questions (Google, October 28, 2026).

One more paid lever reads the feed directly. AI Max for Shopping campaigns (beta) includes text customization, which rewrites product titles from your Merchant Center feed and website content and is "built to perform seamlessly in newer search experiences, such as AI Overview and AI Mode". Customized titles only serve when they are predicted to beat your original titles, and the feature is limited to English feeds as of October 2026 (About AI Max for Shopping campaigns). Your source titles are still the raw material.

What should you fix first in the feed?

Work from the data that blocks visibility everywhere to the data that adds detail for long questions. This order keeps effort where it affects both Shopping ads and AI answers.

  1. Clear disapprovals and mismatches. A disapproved product is invisible in every surface. Check that price and availability match the landing page and checkout, as the product data specification requires. Note that Google has announced a 500 x 500 pixel minimum for image_link, enforced from January 31, 2027.
  2. Rewrite titles and descriptions for specifics. Put the product type, brand and the attributes shoppers ask about (material, size, use case) in the title, and use the description to answer the questions a sales associate would get.
  3. Fill identifiers and core attributes. Submit gtin and brand where they exist, plus color, size and material where the category calls for them.
  4. Add highlights and details. Use product_highlight for selling benefits and product_detail for technical, verifiable specs.
  5. Add conversational attributes through a supplemental data source.
  6. Get reviews into Merchant Center through Product Ratings.

Titles and descriptions

Conversational queries are long. Google said in May 2026 that retailers can use conversational attributes "to update their product descriptions" to match how people now search, and that strong product descriptions are "critical for brands to get discovered in the AI era" (Google, May 20, 2026). In practice, the gap is usually scale: a catalog of thousands of SKUs with titles copied from the e-commerce platform. Clarmix's Feed Enrichment scores each SKU's attributes from 0 to 100, then proposes AI rewrites of titles, descriptions, Google product categories and product types that you accept or edit before they are pushed through a supplemental feed, so the primary feed stays untouched.

Highlights and conversational attributes

Google's product_highlight page asks for at least 2 highlights, recommends 4 to 6, and allows 1 to 150 characters each. It says highlights help customers find product information "on AI-driven surfaces, such as AI Mode", and warns against SEO keywords and against repeating what is already in the title or description.

The conversational attributes guide lists six attributes: question_and_answer, document_link, related_product, item_group_title, variant_option and popularity_rank. Google recommends sending them through a supplemental data source, notes that adding them "won't impact the approval status of your existing products", and asks you not to repeat details already in the description, highlights or product details. For variant families, item_group_title works with item_group_id, and variant_option needs both. Our post on Merchant Center attributes for AI Overviews explains each one with examples.

Writing questions and answers for every SKU by hand rarely happens. Clarmix's conversational attributes tool audits and generates these attributes, plus product_highlight and product_detail, from Merchant Center and Google Ads data and optional PDF, CSV or XML files, then sends them through a supplemental feed.

Reviews

Ratings appear as stars in Shopping ads and free listings. To join Product Ratings you need "at least 50 reviews across all your products", submitted through a supported aggregator or uploaded in Merchant Center, and matching depends heavily on identifiers such as GTINs (Product Ratings basics). Stores that do not collect reviews can start with Google Customer Reviews at no cost.

How do you check whether your feed changes improved AI visibility?

Use Merchant Center first, then Search Console and Google Ads, and treat third-party tools as a complement.

  • Merchant Center AI performance insights. Found under Analytics, then Products, then the AI performance tab. It covers AI Mode and AI Overviews and shows share of voice against your competitor set, a split by shopping stage (Discovery, Evaluation, Ready to buy), top terms, top intents and popular attributes your data is missing. As of October 2026 it covers English-language queries in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the US, updates daily with a few days' lag, and is "strictly limited to organic AI traffic (for example, free listings)" (About AI performance insights). You review one product category at a time and cannot edit the competitor list. We cover how to use it in 4 ways to use AI performance insights in Merchant Center.
  • Search Console. Clicks from AI features on your website are counted in the Performance report under the Web search type, not as a separate line (Google Search Central).
  • Google Ads. Ad delivery in AI answers is mixed into your Shopping and PMax reports, so compare product-level impressions and conversions before and after a feed change rather than looking for an AI Mode row.
  • Third-party trackers. Tools that run prompts across AI assistants can fill the gaps, especially outside Google. See our list of AI search visibility tools for e-commerce sites.

A simple routine: pick one category, note its share of voice and the missing attributes the report lists, fix those attributes for the top products, then compare after two to four weeks. Change one thing at a time where you can, so you know which fix moved the number.

What changes for UK stores?

UK advertisers can do all the feed work today, but the measurement and the paid placement arrive later. As of October 2026, AI performance insights does not list the UK among its supported countries, and Google has said ads in AI Mode should reach the UK in Q4 2026. The attribute rules are the same, so a feed fixed now is ready when both arrive.

Where do Business Agent and Universal Cart fit?

Both build on the same Merchant Center data. Business Agent is a chat on Google Search where shoppers ask a brand about its products; it uses "information from your Merchant Center account" and, to customize it, you need a US store, a verified account, at least 50 approved free listings and a claimed brand profile (Get started with Business Agent). Universal Cart, launched in the US on October 15, 2026, lets shoppers save products across Search, AI Mode and Gemini; we explain the checkout side in our Google Universal Cart guide.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate feed for AI Mode?

No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your existing Merchant Center feed, plus optional conversational attributes sent through a supplemental data source, is the input.

Can I see how my Shopping ads perform in AI Mode?

Not on its own as of October 2026. Google Ads includes these queries in your standard campaign and search terms reports in aggregate, and you cannot target or opt out of AI Mode separately from Search.

Does AI performance insights include paid traffic?

No. Google says the report is strictly limited to organic AI traffic, such as free listings. Use your Google Ads reports for paid results.

Does llms.txt or special schema help products appear in Google's AI answers?

Google says an llms.txt file "will neither harm nor help" visibility in Google Search, and that no special schema.org markup is needed for generative AI search. Keep your product structured data for rich results, and put the effort into the feed.

Which conversational attributes should I add first?

Start with product_highlight and question_and_answer on your best-selling products, since they answer the questions shoppers ask in long queries. Add item_group_title and variant_option if you sell variants, and document_link if you have manuals or spec sheets.
